2020 Horizon Graduation Plan

Dear Horizon Jr./ Sr. High School Seniors/ Guardians of Seniors:

A couple of weeks ago, our seniors concluded that they would prefer to have their graduation at Horizon High School.  Given the current state of the CoronaVirus pandemic and social distancing requirements related to it, an indoor graduation, as originally planned, was not possible.  A plan for an outdoor graduation at Horizon on May 29th at 6pm was submitted last week and approved on Friday.

The Plan:  At 5:45pm graduates will line up at the far end of the green area six feet apart and march along the sidewalk to their seats (six feet apart) under the covered porch.  Families of graduates will remain in the vehicles and have one spot reserved along the curb to view the ceremony  Our traditional order of speeches and ceremony will occur, most through video.  Graduates will accept their diplomas (already laid out on a table on the stage).  After receiving their diploma, graduates will go stand by their family’s vehicle until the ceremony is complete.  All school personnel will use appropriate PPE as expected for an outdoor event of this type. The approximate length of the ceremony is less than one hour.  Each graduate’s family will have one parking spot that is curb-side (approximately 30 feet from the stage).  Family members are expected to remain in their vehicle.  Additional vehicles are permitted, but they must park in the main parking lot.  We will have a staff member directing traffic and parking.  We will have a staff member taking pictures throughout the event and those photos will be shared with family and students, so there is no need to get out of vehicles for pictures.  The ceremony will also be live broadcast on the internet and radio (KNYN) for the public to watch https://mylocalradio.com/evanston/.  The school building/ restrooms ect will not be open to the public so please plan accordingly.

Practice:  Practice is mandatory if students plan to participate in the commencement ceremony.  We will practice with students from 12:30-1:30pm prior to the ceremony at 6 pm.  They will need to meet by the bus stop area for this- to start with.  They will need to stay 6 feet apart from each other, and staff.

Caps/ Gowns:  Caps and gowns for graduation will be provided (free of charge this year).  Seniors that have completed their coursework can pick these up at the main office Wednesday, May 27th between 9am and 3:00pm.  All courses must be complete before caps/ gowns will be issued.  All courses and graduation requirements must be completed in order to participate in the commencement ceremony.
